On 24 May 2024, the new access road to Riesern was officially opened and dedicated to Johann Grander, the renowned inventor and water researcher from Jochberg.

Johann Grander, born on 24 April 1930 in Jochberg, significantly contributed to making his community known regionally and internationally. His invention of the GRANDER Water Revitalisation technology gained worldwide recognition, bringing attention to his hometown.

Grander’s biography showcases a Tyrolean who, despite many adversities, always pursued his dreams and achieved remarkable success through hard work and determination. He continuously reinvented and developed himself, never losing sight of his passion for technology and science.

It took four decades for his technical inventions to be integrated into scientific research, proving his and others' theories on water treatment and revitalisation.

Political Career and Achievements of Johann Grander in Jochberg

Johann Grander, known as the inventor of the GRANDER Water Revitalisation technology, also had a significant, albeit brief, political career in his hometown of Jochberg. His political journey began in the early 1970s when he decided to run for a single term as a municipal councillor.

Political Journey

Grander became a member of the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ), to which he had close ties due to family reasons. During his tenure as SPÖ chairman and municipal board member, Grander demonstrated great skill and dedication. His ability to mobilize people and inspire them for a common cause stemmed from his authenticity and unwavering convictions. His tenure was marked by integrity and determination.

Contributions to the Community of Jochberg

Johann Grander's political activities brought numerous benefits to the Tyrolean community of Jochberg. He worked to improve the quality of life for residents and promoted projects that benefited the community. His efforts helped revitalize and improve the social and economic life in Jochberg.

Grander’s charismatic personality and ability to connect significant figures played a central role in bringing Jochberg into the spotlight. The Austrian Social Democratic President, Franz Jonas, visited Jochberg at Grander's invitation, which was a significant event for the community.

Bruno Kreisky, later the Austrian Chancellor, was a frequent guest in Jochberg. Kreisky and Grander had an immediate rapport, leading to regular visits. Kreisky occasionally brought other politicians to meet Johann Grander, including the Tyrolean Health Minister Herbert Salcher and the young Finance Minister Hannes Androsch.

Archbishop Alois Kothgasser, with whom Grander had a friendship, also visited him. Federal President Dr. Heinz Fischer visited Johann Grander in Jochberg as well.

These visits significantly contributed to the recognition and prestige of Jochberg. After his political activities ended, Johann Grander withdrew from politics to focus on his inventions and company. His commitment and successes left a lasting impact on Jochberg, demonstrating his deep connection to the community.

Internationally renowned water researchers, such as Prof. Gerald H. Pollack and Prof. Eshel Ben Jakob, regularly visited him at his company or his “thinker’s hut.”

Grander’s remarkable hospitality towards his visitors, regardless of who they were, showcased his respectful and welcoming nature. Whether they were university professors or curious visitors from around the world, they were all warmly received.

Overall, Johann Grander’s innovative work and the international spread of his water revitalisation technology significantly helped raise the profile of Jochberg and enhance the community’s reputation.

The company he founded continues to contribute significantly to the region's value creation, not only economically but also in the tourism sector, thanks to his tireless efforts to develop the show mine. The currently closed show mine provided 250,000 interested visitors with insights into working and living conditions underground.

National and international seminars and events brought thousands of people to Jochberg to learn about the latest water research or share their knowledge as speakers. This also contributed to positive tourism development and value creation in the region.

Naming a street after Johann Grander, Johann-Grander-Straße, is a testament to his achievements and helps keep his memory and contributions to science and technology alive in the community. Such honours make the history and significance of Jochberg and the Kitzbühel region visible to visitors and residents alike.
